Kodaline

There is no definite formula for successful band breakthroughs, but if you want to know how it is possible, ask Kodaline.
Kodaline is an Irish rock band composed of four lads—Steve Garrigan on vocals, Mark Prendergast on guitars, Jay Boland on bass, and Vinny May on drums—who share the same passion about songcraft. They were formed in 2005 under the name 21 Demands with Steve, Mark, and Vinny in it. It was in 2011 when the band decided to change their name and welcome bassist Jay into the group.
What really makes the band’s breakthrough different? It’s simple—timing. 2013 welcomed the return of the guitar bands and Kodaline definitely made the perfect arrival. Kodaline had released several EPs in the past, took several opportunities to showcase their talent, and eventually released their first studio album—that could be a formula right there. The release of their studio album In A Perfect World garnered them an army of fans not only in their native United Kingdom but also in the United States and other neighbouring countries in Europe. Kodaline has also matched Adele’s 9-week Irish chart record, a proof of the band’s skyrocketing career.
All I Want is the album’s lead track which was also included in the band’s 2012 debut EP, The Kodaline EP. The track’s 2-part video has been viewed a million times to date on YouTube, proving how viral the video went because of its melodramatic theme. All I Want has also been featured on Grey’s Anatomy and has also been used as background music for Google’s Zeitgeist 2012: A Year In Review. The album also includes strong tracks such as Brand New Day, High Hopes, Love Like This, Way Back When and the very recent One Day.
In terms of musicality, Kodaline sounds very similar to Coldplay during their Parachutes days. The lyrics are very much a shot to anyone’s heart. As stated in the band’s website profile, the purpose of their music is honesty. To that, they write songs about the easiest thing to write about, breakups; thinking it would be therapy not only to them but also to their listeners.
In A Perfect World is definitely an album about a myriad of situations after breaking up—admitting the relationship will never work, hoping to get back with your ex, waiting for the day when your ex finally gives you another chance, and just looking back at all the good things that transpired.
A lot is in store for the band and for its fans. After Kodaline’s American Idol performance, fans can look forward to the band’s tours and catch them on music festivals (Glastonbury and Liverpool Sound City to name a few). Fans can also patiently wait for the band’s collaboration with Harry Styles to be released, although it might be a long shot.
There are many bands out there who can also tell similar stories about their group but with Kodaline, there’s no need for an expounded story telling. The band’s timing and quality of music has landed them a promising future.
